Nora & Her Family
in the Caymans
BW and I ask the concierge the directions to the art
gallery. She helpfully tells us to turn left toward George
Town. BW looks confused and mentions that George Town is to
the right. She looks confused and gets one of the small
tourist maps and circles the plaza where the gallery's
located. It is, indeed, to the right.
Now we know how Dan, Stacie and I ended up walking in the
wrong direction to the pharmacy. LOL.
Most of the offerings in the gallery are prints, but we
find a small and very nice selection of originals. And find
just what we're looking for with a little watercolor that
shows a slice of Seven Mile Beach. I also fall for a bright
and fanciful portrait of a cow titled Lovely Rita. She's
wearing a hat and high heels and has big blue eyes in a
beguiling face. I resist only because it's a really large
canvas--a plaque really, I suppose. I don't know where I'd
put her.
But I'm thinking about it.
We shop a bit more and I whittle down more Christmas
shopping.
BW wants to drive around the island some more. I manage
to resist this temptation as well--haha--and take my
afternoon swim while he's off looking for something to
photograph. It's a busy day at the pool. Lots of people, but
I snag a chaise, do some reading.
BW comes back to report there's nothing on the island of
photographic interest. It's just flat. LOL.
There's a air show here on Saturday, and one of the
planes is practicing--or showing off. We can stand on our
terrace and watch the aerodynamics. He does loops, dives,
stalls and spins. I can never figure out why anyone actively
desires to fly upside down in a plane.
We head into George Town for dinner at Casanova's.
Authentic Italian down to the wait staff. Those pretty
biscuit colored walls painted with grape leaves, big
paintings of Italian scenes--Venice, Florence. Little tables
all crowded together and a wall of windows facing the water.
I get spaghetti and meatballs. It's amazing--like the
owner has his mother back in the kitchen cooking. We watch
this group of four who were there at the bar when we
arrived. They're drinking wine. They continue to drink for
about another 30 minutes while we eat. Then they order
another bottle of wine and a bottle of champagne. They
mostly work through that before they order a starter. And
two more bottles of wine.
We have a leisurely meal, including coffee and dessert,
and when we finally get up to leave after a pleasant
two-hours, they're glassy-eyed and not yet to their entrees.
I know four people who are going to wake up with very nasty
headaches.
We take a long walk on the beach back at the hotel. Lots
of stars out, and the surf is warm.
Have to spruce up a bit today for my Cayman signing.
