An important message

P.M.
Heading out shortly.
I noticed a very unhappy post on my home page
guest book today about a canceled appearance at
Waldenbooks in Sacramento. I thought I would
explain here how the book tour works, from my end.
I don't pick stores or cities or days. I just
pack my bag and follow my daily schedule--which is
supplemented and changed almost daily with faxes
from NY. An author on book tour isn't in charge of
anything. <g>
Unfortunately, some stops are changed or
canceled along the way. This is never done
carelessly by the publisher. Reasons for the
changes vary, but happen, particularly with tours
of this length. It's awfully hard to predict every
circumstances over a four week period that involves
over twenty cities.
Travel times, flights, traffic patterns, climate
and so on all play into the game. Also as the tour
progresses, further research by Publicity sometimes
unearths different problems with scheduled venues
that require adjustments.
I always hate having to disappoint anyone who's
made plans to attend an appearance. I wish
cancellations or changes didn't have to happen.
I can only ask readers to be understanding. It's
tough being out here, away from home, living out of
a suitcase, gearing up every morning for what's
often going to be a sixteen or seventeen hour day.
Everyone involves does the best that can be done to
make it all work. The bright point for me--other
than those occasional shopping bursts and the glory
of room service--is meeting the readers at the
bookstores. I'm really sorry I can't get to more
cities and have a few moments with more of you.
