Here is my story about meeting Nora that ended
up being something out of both Heaven and Hell.
This was only my second time seeing Nora, the
first being for River's End. I hadn't
discovered her until the summer of '98, so I have
lots to catch up on. Thank God for reissues.
Anyway, me and my mom get to Palo Alto early, and
its a good thing because the computer spit out the
wrong directions on how to get to the book store
(this happened to a lot of people, I have a feeling
some didn't ever find it).
The bookstore is pretty cool, but CLEARLY
unprepared for Nora in town. They had one poster up
advertising her signing. I go in check out the
store and wonder where the discussion is going to
be held because the cafe is bigger than the actual
store. They have about 30 books of Nora's, half CM/
half WID. No other books. Anyway, we leave do some
other stuff, come back and buy both books, and the
guy just happens to mention, you know the signing
is out and in back of the store, We say no, thank
him and make our way to the back.
It's like in an alley, very weird. Not a lot of
people in there, but it ended up pretty packed. We
talk and meet new friends. I'm constantly turning
around to look for Nora. 8:00 I turn around and
there she is. I'm like in a trance and can't stop
staring. She walks right by me and takes her seat
in the corner.
Honestly, I thought she looked pissed, but she
looked good pissed. I think she was just tired
because she was smiling at this time, drinking diet
coke. The bookstore guy talks a minute, tells a
really bad joke about not being able to get both
Nora and J.D. Robb at the same time. I'm sparing
you this joke. He introduces her and we give her a
standing ovation. She looks surprised and then we
talk until 8:30.
She is extremely funny, and very easy going.
People get in line and this is where the hell
starts. The very first person has her sign about 10
books, walks to the back and gets back in line.
She's in the corner, so if you want a picture she
has to keep getting up because it's easier for her
to come out then us to go in behind her and the
table. I'm taking pictures with her and other
people because that's the best shot.
Ok, my turn. Pure Heaven. She smiles, I hand her
my CM and ask if she had to throw anyone out the
window the night before. I wish I had a picture of
the look on her face for all of you to see when she
looked up. Classic :) She starts talking to me and
my mom about it. I then mention that I told quite a
few people about TTP that had no idea about it. She
said Bruce would love me and that they should put
me on commission. I'm smiling like an idiot the
whole time. She shakes my hand and we talk about
TTP and Lisa while she signs my books. I had her
sign 5 (isn't this her rule, please tell me because
I do not want to pull what some of these others
were). She thanks me again and I ask to take a
picture. She says yes, we do, and then she hugged
me. I swear if a river was by, I could have walked
across it :) So I stand by while she signs my
mom's.
My mom asked why she dedicated such a dark book
(Divine Evil) to her sons. Nora says
something like, well, it's not because they're
little devils, more to do with the setting because
that's where they grew up around. My mom says
something, and Nora looks over at me and smiles.
Something passed between them I don't even want to
know about. So we have someone take a picture of
the three of us, then she says mom gets a hug too.
An experience I will never forget :)
More hell to come. We sit around and wait for
some friends to get done. Meanwhile here come 3
people with about 20 books EACH for her to sign.
Either her escort or the bookstore guy come and
help her out. And at the end here come the ladies
with 3 HUGE plastic containers full of books for
her to sign. There had to be about 100 plus in
there. We were leaving so I have no idea what she
ended up signing. People do ruin it for her I'm
sure.
Finally, I'm sure you all want to know about
what she was wearing. A black leather jacket, black
pants, white shirt (silk, I'm sure) with a black
vest. And boots. She looked really good. Well, that
is my story about meeting Nora. When the pictures
develop, I'll send them in.
