Debby Snowbear had asked me earlier last week if
I would want to take a road trip with her down to
the Springs for the signing when Nora came to town.
I told her that sure, I'd love to go. However, I
didn't really believe we'd actually DO it until
Debby pulled up in front of my townhouse... she
tends to be chained to her desk at work, you see,
and I must confess I didn't think she'd actually
leave the place when there was still daylight
outside. LOL But she arrived shortly before noon,
and we headed south. Even stopped off at the outlet
mall on the way down the road, and also had a nice
relaxing lunch. Then it was onward to the signing,
which was scheduled from 4:00 to 6:00.
It was a glorious day... incredibly blue, clear
skies, lovely white puffy clouds, and temps in the
high 70s. At our altitude, that's about the perfect
temperature. The weather was ideal for a road trip.
Neither of us had been out of town in forever, so
we were thrilled to be on the open road.
Overall, I'd say the signing was a big hit. Lots
of people there, even tho it was a sort of odd time
for a signing on a weekday. There's a large
population of Nora fans in the Springs (as
everywhere). There's also a large community of
other romance writers, so the RWA contingent always
comes out in large numbers. There were probably 10
or so published writers that I recognized (prolly
more that I didn't), and around 30 or so from the
local RWA chapter. We looked for CeeCe and Martha
and Julie from the Colo Springs BBN contingent, but
alas didn't see them. However, we hadn't known for
sure we would come, so hadn't even attempted to
make contact, so that was our fault. :o(
Nora arrived, and was her usual gracious self.
Forgive me, NancyD, as I spaced out the important
stuff. I vaguely remember she wore a white shell
top, black blazer and pants, and had on very
simple, elegant gold jewelry. Spaced the shoes
altogether, I'm afraid. I meant to go look later,
but I failed you. Profuse apologies. Hopefully
Debby noticed. I could bluff if I weren't so
compulsively honest. It would be a very safe bet to
say that they were black Maglis. <g> We can
ask Nora tomorrow if Debby doesn't remember.
This was strictly a signing, so Nora arrived
(her driver Lisa got her there early btw), sat down
and and started signing. The line went pretty
quickly, and before long Debby and I were at the
front. Nora recognized us right off, and thrilled
us both by jumping up and giving us both big hugs.
We felt EVER so special. <vbg> She signed our
stuff, and told us that she was tired, but holding
up pretty well. She said she didn't plan to ever
make such a long tour in the future, tho -- four
weeks will be her limit. I mentioned to Nora that I
had something for her, but would wait until a more
quiet moment to give it to her. Then we went toward
the back of the store and hung out. We had some
nice chats with others in the store, and also with
Nora's driver, Lisa. This is the same gal who has
been driving Nora around for five years. She knows
us by now, so we hung out and chatted for quite
awhile about all sorts of stuff.
There was a big crowd for the first hour, then
sporadic groups for the second hour while Nora
signed stock. And more stock. And even more stock!
LOL Cases and cases of stock.
Once the two hours was up and Nora was leaving,
we walked out to the SUV with them, and I gave Nora
her gift. Lisa and Debby both liked it a lot...
they'd seen it while it was still being made (I was
working on it last week at Jenny Crusie's signing,
where Lisa was also in attendance, and we'd chatted
briefly there as well), so before Nora had even
opened it, they both told her that if she didn't
want it, they would be happy to give it a home. :o)
I'd made her a quilted (big surprise there, eh?)
pillow. Thought she might want to put her head down
and take a nap when she got a chance, since they'd
been running her ragged! <g> It is a gold
Celtic design appliqued on top of a really cool
teal, burgundy, peacock blue and gold print, with a
teal moda marble border. The back is a soft
polysuede, to make it comfy for napping. Nora liked
it, and said they were "her" colors. Made me happy!
<g> She gave me another hug. Made me happier!
LOL
Then we parted company until tomorrow. Lisa had
mentioned she has a busy day planned for Nora,
including TV and radio spots. Unfortunately we got
interrupted about the time this was brought up, so
neither Debby nor I learned when or where the other
appearances will be. :o( Hopefully we can find out
tomorrow, tho.
Tomorrow nite is the big discussion/signing at
the Tattered Cover. Should be fun. Lots of other
pals coming for that one. I took some pics, will
take more, and will pass them along once they are
developed.
