Ho boy, no time to check in yesterday. The
Baltimore signing was great. Lots of friendly
people buying lots of books. Then the long drive
into DC. The Hay Adams is a gorgeous hotel, and I
was happy to get there. Ate cheese and crackers and
fell into the bed.
Up for the morning show, did a radio spot, then
caught a muffin back at the hotel, checked out,
headed for Arlington for the Borders signing. Also
really good. Much bigger crowd than I expected for
mid-day, mid-week. Pleased the bookseller very
much. <g>
One free hour before the next radio spot. Escort
dropped me at Neiman's. Copped two jackets and two
pair of shoes. Amazing how much better I felt after
that. LOL. Ate fries on the way to the airport.
A bit of a wait there, and my flight was delayed
30 minutes, which put the squeeze on me to make the
connection in Charlotte. Bummer. The gates were two
concourses apart, bigger bummer. Hauled my butt,
and they'd nearly finished boarding when I arrived.
No room in the overhead for my carry-on. I am
distressed. I am terrified. If I give it up, they
will lose it and I'll have nothing. I must have
looked pitiful. They took it away, and I decided
not to worry. What can you do? Short flight, and on
landing, the flight attendant brought my carry-on
out. They found room for it somewhere. LOL. I must
have REALLY looked pitiful.
Escort meets me, and we drive to the hotel.
Pretty hotel, very charming. I get into my room
about ten pm. Discover they have NO room service,
but deal with a restaurant that delivers lunch and
dinner--until ten. I eat a cookie.
I have to get up at 4:40 a.m. This is why book
tours are the only legalized torture. Horrible. I
staggered around, pulled myself together, went
hunting a Diet Pepsi and had to settle for a real
Coke. Drive through the dark to the TV station.
Nearly nod off in the green room. Do the interview
with two guys--it's just fine. They no nothing
about the book, or romance, so I could lead the
way. Then I got to pet one of the puppies who were
coming on in the next segment.
Back to the hotel, where I get into my pjs and
crawl back into bed. I'm free until two. Or so I
believe.
The phone rings an hour later--it's a reporter
from the Atlanta paper, and we have a phoner. I
remember this vaguely even as my brain struggles to
wake up. It didn't make it onto the schedule, which
is a mistake, but I do recall being told of this
addition at some point. I've interviewed with this
guy before, so it's fine, and I believe I was
coherent.
Called BW, called NY, will do my mail, then try
to get myself dressed again, go out and find a damn
Diet Pepsi and a stupid muffin.
I have another radio this afternoon, then the
signing, then the flight to Atlanta. Two days in
Atlanta--Yippee.
Weather is fabulous.
