Nora Roberts's BLUE SMOKE

Atlanta, Georgia to Richmond, Virginia to Baltimore, Maryland
October 12-14, 2005

Busy, busy.

Ended my Atlanta leg with the wonderful Margaret Mitchell House. What a wonderful and unique venue. I got to tour the little apartment where Mitchell wrote GWTW. Tiny place, and she sat in the parlor in this tiny corner, putting chapter by chapter in individual manila envelopes. Fascinating.

We have a really nice crowd. I give a talk here, then a Q&A. And get to do the signing on the big porch outside. So nice.

Back to the hotel, almost straight to bed.

Up for my flight to Richmond, and though all that goes as smoothly as you can expect, I have developed a true hatred for airports. They just tire me out.

Into Richmond where I have a day room as I'll head into Baltimore after the event. Lovely hotel where I've stayed before. The young bellman is so proud of it, so eager, I can't quite get rid of him. LOL. I only have an hour flat to change, do make-up, organize. TV deal coming up. But he wants to show me everything, tell me everything, even when I say it's only a day room. He's too sweet to push out the door.

But finally he's gone and I pop a Diet Coke, do the change, fix the face and hair as best I can manage and go down to meet Publicity Craig. Bo drives us here—and told me on the way from the airport his wife is expecting their first child within the next couple weeks. And had a little spill that broke a small bone in her hand. Poor thing!

Do the TV—nice, clean spot. Back to the hotel for a quick bite before the event.

Again a nice crowd—and the woman in charge of the event is expecting HER first baby next month. They do a good job at the store, and everyone seems happy. A couple of young women come up the get their books signed and are so excited they mostly giggle. So cute.

When it's over, I meet Craig's parents who live in Richmond—and they've bought me a cookie for the road. Mmmmm.

Long drive to Baltimore, and we hit rain, we hit traffic. Why are there so many people out so late? Go home, for God's sake. I see signs for Frederick—I could be home in an hour! Later I see signs for the exit I take to go down to my mother's. Hi, Ma!

But on we go.

Get in close to 11:30. I'm sort of punchy. Atlanta to Richmond to Baltimore. Some triple play. The room's cold. WHY are they always cold? Take out what I need for the morning. Go to bed just after midnight. I can't get my feet warm, but finally fall asleep.

Have to be up at 7:00. Drag tired ass into the shower, dress, do face and hair. Find schedule. Meet Greg, my escort here. Young, cute, new. TV first, and there's an amazing a cappella group in studio who do a number before I'm on. Terrific pipes.

Radio next—which turns out to be what was third on the schedule. Mix up somewhere. But we do the radio—drive time. I've done this station before, and the guys are a hoot. Fun and funny and full of energy.

Onto Coffee With—taped—with my old pal Marty. That'll air Mon.

Back to the hotel to organize what I threw around in my morning stupor, then do two phoners. Lunch ordered. Yay.

Going to eat and rest my brain until event time.
