Da Bus from Bentonville to Memphis
Saturday-Sunday, April 12-13, 2003
Pretty wiped here, but it's almost over.
The bus from Bentonville to Memphis was the best. Nothing but fun for six hours.
This is one big-ass bus driven by the Amazing Tod. It has a lounging area with facing sofas, a TV, stereo, DVD and so on. A counter for preparing food or drink, a refrigerator. Then you go back to the sleeping area, with I think about a dozen berths, like in a train. Harold made use of one while I did the Wal-Mart signing, and said it was a little like waking up in a coffin. LOL.
Back from that is another lounge area, with another TV and so on, another fridge.
We had our supplies and started off with music and champagne and pretty much kept that up for the entire trip. Lots of laughs, a complete de-stresser. We finished up with an Elvis DVD as we were coming into Memphis.
We said our goodbyes to Tod, checked in, then headed out for ribs. Yum.
Too tired to go check out Beal Street.
Sunday, I work out, then we head out to Graceland in a big limo--with a stop at a diner for breakfast. Food!!!
I've done Graceland before, but it's always fascinating and, for me, sad. Poor guy got used up. We take tons of pictures, buy lots of tacky souveniers. I'm always amazed by the costumes on display--those Vegas era jumpsuit with belt buckles the size of license plates and enough sequins and studs to light the Strip. I prefer the black leather jacket Elvis.
We try for Sun Records tour, but the place is packed. So it's back to the hotel for an adult beverage and dinner plans. We go to Beal Street for that and have enormous steaks or fried cat fish. After dinner it's a loong walk on Beal for the atmosphere, the music, more souveniers.
Unfortunately I have to go back to work the next day so it's goodbye to the gang.
I definitely vote for tour bus travel as often as possible.
