Valentining on the Web
by Susan
Romanelli
How does he love thee? Let's
count the ways. On February 14, 1998 that'll be a
billion greeting cards, at
least 100 million roses, and more than a half billion dollars
worth of chocolate.
Not bad for a pagan holiday that once required a
young Romeo to simply pelt his sweetie with
goat skins. Of course the Valentine part of
the holiday didn't happen for a few more centuries,
when cranky Claudius II executed not one, but two,
determined Christians named Valentine on, you guessed it, February 14th.
History made them the patron saints of love -- with
a little help from the Duke of Orleans (who sent
the first Valentine) and a traveling salesman named
Hall (who made it de rigueur to keep caring
enough to send the very best).
So the pressure's on, as cash
registers bleep in the background, for love to make
quite a bank statement this week. But we're romance
readers. We want tradition and we want it all
wrapped up in interesting ways! You don't have to
think the explosion of pink and red in the display
window at Victoria's Secret is scarier than a Scream II screening to desire a few Valentine
alternatives.
First, tell the guy, he can't go
wrong with a romance novel by your favorite
author. A dozen red roses means he's noted the
date on the calendar, but knowing your honey
ventured into the pastel realm beyond women's
fiction and came out alive with a new copy of
Seaswept means he's actually listening to you.
Since you've got the book, the bubble bath shouldn't be far behind. Lifeguard
optional.
And a woman's got to eat.
Whether it's homecooking, or that little place you first met, quarterpounders and
supersized fries might be too traditional. Unless
poetry's
part of the menu. If not, hey tonight's the one
night of the year you can probably sneak Sense and
Sensibility into the VCR. Hold the onions!
