WE ARE NOT WORTHY!
This is the unanimous decision
of the VALENTINE CONTEST judges. We tried ...
HONEST. We read each and every entry, tried to
choose ONE winner in each category (after all, we
only had TWO PRIZES).
And it would have been so simple
if Sue and Bookie had simply agreed with my
choices. But noooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!
So, in quiet desperation, we
turn to YOU ... The BB/N's. Please help choose the
winners - a la Jerry MacGuire ... Help US, Help
YOU!!!! It's simple (lol, yes ... when someone ELSE
has to do it, it's simple!)
Read each entry. Decide which
ONE story you find to be the funniest, or the one
that made ya smile. And pick the ONE that warmed
your heart. Then send me, Wymzee, your choice -
that's the easiest part, each entry has been
assigned a number.
The winner of the funniest will
receive REBELLION. The winner of the most
heartwarming will receive the once-loved, signed
BORN IN series.
And ... thank you - Difficult
choices such as these should NEVER be left in the
hands of a Wymzee, a Bookie, and a Broad named Sue.
:-)
How do you decide the "winning story"? Simple. Yes,
simple. Read through EACH of them once. Just read
it. And then go back and re-read them. Forget the
spelling, the grammar , the sentence structure.
Just read. And see which story touches your heart.
That is the "winning story." If more than one
touches your heart, go back to them & go
through the same process again. There has to be a
BESTEST of the best ... a story that touches you
just a tad-bit more than another.
Once you've made you decision,
e-mail us here at ADWOFF@aol.com ... The end date for the judging will be
Wednesday, February 25, 1998. Do NOT delay!

He ran by me lie a young Norse
god, clad in nothing but cut-off jeans and a
California sunshine smile. I sat on the cliffs
overlooking the Pacific and watched him descend to
the surf, and my teenage heart tripped wildly as I
imagined pleasures I'd dreamed of, but never
tasted, with this very man. You see, I'd seen him
before, but only in my dreams. At the surfline, he
plunged into the sea and swam out to his friends
who were waiting for the next wave. Did my love
surf in? Did he display any of his manly powers? He
did not! Instead, he paddled from one friend to the
next, waved his arms, and pointed at me. I thought
it was a crying shame that I'd waited all these
years, and my lover turned out to be a little
strange. Heavy-hearted, I left. Months later I was
introduced to this same young man. I, being the
shy, retiring type, asked him what the heck he'd
been doing that day, swimming around like a Looney
Tune character. He just smiled that glorious smile
again, and said, "I was asking my friends if they
knew you. You see, you're the girl of my
dreams."
Thirty-four years later, he
tells me that I still am.

ok ... now, being single ...
still... I don't have a story of my own ... it's my
mom and step-dad ... Elli and Robert...to me it is
romantic, they seemed to know right away that "this
was it." And it has to be the longest first date in
recorded history <G>
Mom is a psychic, and did
consulting by appt. And Robert was a widower who
knew a mutual friend of mom's. This friend
suggested Robert book an apt. with mom to maybe
help huim through a rough time he was in. So Robert
calls mom, introduces himself, and once they
started talking they didn't stop for 2 hours. Hung
up, and Robert realized he had forgotten to book
the appt.!
So he calls mom back, books the
appt. right up front, and then they proceed to
spend another couple of hours talllking. Now we
jump forward to the appt. date. Robert shows up,
mom talks to him about what she does and they
proceed. After the reading is over, they sit around
talking for another couple of hours ... again. But
before robert leaves, he asks mom out to dinner for
the next Friday.
Friday night he takes mom to a
nice dinner, and then a drive up the hills to see
the city lights ... yes, talking more. They ended
up at Robert's house and when mom called me on
sunday she hadn't been home yet! Then on Monday she
called to tell me Robert had asked her to move in
and she was! About a week later he started asking
her to marry him. Mom having always said she woud
live with a man before getting married again,
turned him down (gently of course) at each
turn.
About six months later, Robert
decides he's strating to wear dowwn her resistance
and goes for it - he gets a marriage license. And
he was right -as Robert usually is. Within a few
weeks, these two sneak off for a long weekend in
Northern Calif. And a planned, not publicized (yes,
even I didn't hear about it) wedding! Just the two
of them, a witness that was a long-time friend of
Robert's and the minister. Mom called me a couple
of days afterwards, to let me know they were taking
a couple of extra days on the way hom, "oh, and
thought we'd let you know before you run into any
of Robert's kids (all of us were 25 t0 35 at the
time) - we got married."
To date, about 15 years later,
they are still married, happy, and loving. and I
still tease mom that she never has "come home from
that first date."

My husband is a teacher so every
summer we are a little tight ... Whenever he gets
his first paycheck in September he goes to the
florist and bring me home flowers ... nothing
sepcific ... just something he always does.
Another story when Juliette my
daughter was born and I couldn't move for a week he
bought me rose and a mother ring with all 3 stones
(which added a 4th when my son was born) I just
remember crying it was so sweet

On my 30th birthday it had been
snowing steadily all day when my dh called to say
he was leaving work early. Work was 35 miles away,
the last 4 a dead-end, rural, seldom-traveled road
with no street lights.
Worrying he wouldn't be able to
make it, I spent what seemed like hours watching
out the window, straining for any glimpse of
headlights. Finally hearing a noise outside, I
opened the door. There was dh, caked with snow,
frozen, unrecognizable.
He'd had to abandon his truck
1/2 mile from our house, and had struggled through
the blizzard balancing his briefcase, a beautiful
birthday cake in a white bakery box, and a carton
of ICE CREAM.

____ and I started dating in
September ... and i wondered and wondered when he
might succumb to my obvious charms ... lolol ...
and admit it. So ... I waited and waited and waited
... and nothing. No words of love or undying
affection ... period. He was great ... sent me
flowers ... cards ... stuff like that. Never roses
.. made a point to notice it was never roses that
we sent.
Valentine's Day was drawing
really close ... know too that Valentine's Day ahs
always been very, very special for me. It is the
only holiday my Dad ever really participated in ...
my Mom, my sister and I always got a Valentine and
a box of chocolates from my Dad ..
So...he is Mr. Hardworking
Salesman ... and is going to WORK that
evening...because hey, it's a weeknight!
<gasp> He made plans to join me for lunch on
our first Val. Day ... took me to a Mexican
restaurant near my office. I had a car for him ...
admitting ... FINALLY ...how I felt about him. But
...you know us females ...always want the guy to
say it first. And I had a tin of red and white
pistachios for him ...his favorite. Well .... we go
over and have lunch. He present me with a jewelry
box ...a pair of gold Woodstock earrings (Metlife
.. his company ... uses the Peanuts characters)
But...still..nothing in the way of ...flowers...or
word...<grin> So...I held of on my
card...lololol.
I am hating life back at my
office after lunch...almost downright depressed. I
get a call late that afternoon. The florist
apologizes prfusely...theyare toooobusy, and won't
be able to delier my rose until the following day.
So...I definitely noticed her use of the word
...ROSES. The next day I'm practically wringing my
haands all day...waiting...waiting...finally at 4
o'clock...could they have kept me in suspense any
longer?? they deliver them ..an my hands are
literally shaking (seems so silly now) I took them
to the kitchen area to put them in a avase
...didn't want anyone overlooking my opening the
card. All the card said was: I love you, _____.
Well, good thing I wasn't holding anything...I'd
have dropped it <g> So there, after 5 months
... finally ... Such a relief!
So ... I called him at work ..to
thank him...and he doesn't say .... ANYTHING
...lolol. That night..I met him late...and slipped
the card onto the table next to him ...and asked
him to open it. So...spilled out my feelings for
him...and asked him if he minded <rotfl> And
we took it from there.

My SIL is a very special person
and waited til she was 34 before she found that
special person and married him. They live out of
town and neither have family close by. So for her
Christmas present, he calls and tells her to pack
an overnight case. Two hours later she look out her
window and sees a limo pull up. Her dh is dresssed
in a tux and has a big gift wrapped box in one hand
an a dozen yellow rose in the other . He gave her a
beautiful emerald sequin gown and a wrist corsage.
Since she had never went to either or her proms in
shcoll he made a prom night for her. They went
dancing and stayed in the bed&breakfast where
they had spent their honeymoon. We all have see the
pictures from that night (prom pictures_ and the
glow from her was something every woman should feel
once in her life. I am so glad they have each other
... no one else could be more deserving.

Years ago I read Total Woman.
Friday while fixin my dh's lunch for him to take to
work, inspiration struck! While he was in a shower
I wrote a note to put in with his cake. I wrote You
can have your cake and eat it too you see and when
you come home I'll be waiting for you so you can
have me! Well, I sent the kids to my parents. I set
the stage. I had a blanket on the floor with his
fav food and wine on chill in a picnic
basket.
My dh loves Garth Brooks song
that goes something like this ...she was in the
kitchen with nothing but her apron on.......Ihad
this apron that had a small bib on and nothing
else. Kenny G was playing in the background. I saw
his headlight in the window and stood in the middle
of the living room, waiting to surprise my husband.
But the man that came through the doorway was not
my dh. It was a friend he had give a lift to;
coming in to call his wife to pick him up. My dh
was just behind him, his arms loaded down with his
lunch box and coat ...he just stared. I grabbed up
the quilt, sending food everywhere and covered
myself and went running from the room. He got the
note but he just didn't expect the surprise when he
offered his friend a lift so he could use our
phone. I t was months beore I could look that
friend in the eyes.

My parents were married on
Valentine's Day. When I was about 5, my Mom decided
to surprise my Dad with a romantic anniversary
dinner. We went shopping for a fancy dinner and for
new "pajamas: (or so she told me.) TOgether we even
made my Dad a heart-shaped Rice Krispies cake,
complete with red food coloring. After an afternoon
of preparations, both primping and cooking, my Mom
packed me up and shipped me off to my grandparents'
house for the night.
We lived in the upstaris
apartment of a house. My Mom had everything ready
just in tmie for my Dad to come home from work. As
she heard my Dad pull up and open the door
downstaris, my Mom threw open the apartment door to
surprise and welcome hi. There she was ... dressed
in her new pj's with a candle lit dinner on the
table behind her, and there stood my Dad and 2 of
his very best buddies, 2 very unexpected and very
shocked guests to a romantic dinner.
