WEAVING THROUGH THE WEB
by
Suz (aka
EdnaCK)
I put off writing this
month's web column as long as I could because I
didn't have a place to start my surfing. MelindaSt
very nicely sent me The
Best Video Guide: Updated daily. Reviews, articles, release dates,
celebrit which I've used as a companion to Leonard
Maltin's Movie and Video Guide. Two thumbs up
Melinda. But I still didn't have a theme.
Today my son was watching
me struggle and he asked, "Why don't you play the
Kevin Bacon game and switch for Nora Roberts?"
Inspiration in a Little League uniform! For anyone
unfamiliar with the Kevin Bacon game, the object is
to choose any actor/actress and link them to Kevin
Bacon. For example, if you choose Liza Minelli, you
link Liza Minelli to Joel Grey in Cabaret, Joel
Grey to Fred Ward in Remo Williams, and Fred Ward
to Kevin Bacon in Tremors. Three steps to Kevin
Bacon!
I decided to do this with
Nora Roberts and random web pages. And, okay, I
cheated. I typed romance novel into my search
engine and connected those results to Nora's
cyberspace home. I do have a day job. <g> But
the following pages do all lead to Nora
Roberts.
Our first link to Nora is
Romance
Writers of America. An easy connection but also a fun
and informative site. RWA is a writer's group
devoted to the production of the romance novel.
You'll find out which romance novels are the award
winners, which are on the bestseller lists, and
which of your favorite authors are doing book
signings this month. RWA has links to author home
pages and also provides a definition of the romance
novel and those important marketing statistics to
quote next time somone asks, "You read romance?"
For romance writers there is also a listserv to
join.
The next site on the list
is a gold mine. World
of Romance Links is a place to visit if you have
some time. Think of something even remotely
connected to romance and it'll be here. Newsgroups,
fiction, dating, romantic things to say, poetry,
writing tips, author home pages, wedding planners,
Bed & Breakfast Hotel guides, diamond sources,
online bookstores, lingerie, Hershey's and Godiva
Chocolate's home pages, FTD Florists, virtual
romance novels, and even a web page for the movie
The Princess Bride where you can download the
script. This is a fraction of what can be found
here.
From here I found
Romancing
the Web, a
full service web site dedicated to Romance Authors
and Readers. Some of the features include: Romance
Author Home Pages including bios, upcoming
appearances, book excerpts, and book covers. Links
to Associations and other places to network,
including RWA chapters and online groups. Shopping
connections. A newsletter with book reviews, new
books, articles, conferences and contests, and
e-mail access to romance authors.
And before my family sends
an online search party after me I'd better close
the column with ROMANCE FOREVER, which is a nice sentiment and
also a terrific magazine. Articles featuring themes
of different romantic genres, history, fashion,
royalty, and travel can be found at this site and
you can also subscribe to the hard copy version of
the magazine.
And in June? I do have a
theme but I need your help again. PCComputing has a
HotList page in every issue. Last December they
highlighted The Simpsons and matched the show's
characters to web sites. Lisa got The Realm of
Existentialism. Selma and Patty got the MacGyver
Page. Homer got the Dunkin Donuts home page. So,
sticking with my departure from originality, next
month I'd like to link some of Nora's characters to
personality-fitting web pages. Suggestions
gratefully accepted, of course! Humor counts.
