A Day Without French Fries ... Messageboard » UBB Code

What is UBB Code?

UBBCode™ is a variation on the HTML tags you may already be familiar with. Basically, it allows you to add functionality or style to your message that would normally require HTML.

All current UBB Code options are listed below.

HYPERLINKS | E-MAIL | BOLD-ITALICS | LISTS | GRAPHICS [GRAPHICS' LIBRARY] | QUOTES | QUICK CODING

URL Hyperlinking

Creating Hyperlinks:

If UBBCode™ is enabled in a forum, you no longer need to use the [URL] code to create a hyperlink. Simply type the complete URL in either of the following manners and the hyperlink will be created automatically:

  • Automatic hyperlinking (no UBBCode required). Simply type the URL, as in http://www.yourURL.com or www.yourURL.com
  • Use the [url] code, in either of the following manner:
      [url=http://www.infopop.com]infopop.com[/url]
      [url]http://www.infopop.com[/url]

For automatic hyperlinking, notice that you can either use the complete http:// address or shorten it to the www domain. If the site does not begin with "www", you must use the complete "http://" address. Also, you may use https and ftp URL prefixes in auto-link mode (when UBBCode™ is ON).

When using the URL UBBCode, the UBBCode™ automatically generates a hyperlink to the URL that is encased. It will also ensure that the link is opened in a new window when the user clicks on it. Note that the "http://" part of the URL is completely optional. Also note that you should NOT use quotation marks inside the URL tag.

Email Linking

Hyperlink E-Mail Address:

To add a hyperlinked email address within your message, just encase the email address as shown in the following example.

[email]info@test5324566.com[/email]

In the example above, the UBBCode™ automatically generates a hyperlink to the email address that is encased.

Bold & Italics

Using BOLD or Italics:

You can make italicized text or make text bold by encasing the applicable sections of your text with either the [b] [/b] or [i] [/i] tags.

Hello, [b]James[/b] : BOLD
Hello,
[i]Mary[/i] : ITALICS

Bullet Lists

Making Lists:

You can make bulleted lists or ordered lists (by number or letter).

Unordered, bulleted list:

[list]
[*] This is the first bulleted item.
[*] This is the second bulleted item.
[/list]

This produces:

  • This is the first bulleted item.
  • This is the second bulleted item.

Note that you must include a closing [/list] when you end each list.

Making ordered lists is just as easy. Just add either [LIST=A] or [LIST=1]. Typing [List=A] will produce a list from A to Z. Using [List=1] will produce numbered lists.

Here's an example:

[list=A]
[*] This is the first bulleted item.
[*] This is the second bulleted item.
[/list]

This produces:

  1. This is the first bulleted item.
  2. This is the second bulleted item.

Displaying Images

Adding Graphics:

To add a graphic within your message, just encase the URL of the graphic image as shown in the following example.

[img]http://www.infopop.com/artwork/footer_logotype.gif[/img]

In the example above, the UBBCode™ automatically makes the graphic visible in your message. Note: the "http://" part of the URL is REQUIRED for the [img] code. Also note: some UBB forums may disable the [img] tag support to prevent objectionable images from being viewed.

ADWOFF has started to create a graphics' library to attempt to make your life easier in posting graphics. Here are the links to those pages:

* On these pages, click on the graphic. It will take you to a new page/window. In the address of the browser, you should see the URL for that graphic. Here's an example

http://adwoff.com/pictures/icons/band.gif

This graphic is this cool little graphic: Let's rock & roll

To insert it into a message, I have to put the URL (http://adwoff.com/pictures/icons/band.gif) between the UBB tag for images -- [img][/img]

So, to insert one of these graphics, I need to follow these three steps:

  1. Go to the graphics' page and click on the graphic you want;
  2. Copy the URL from your browser's address window (example: http://adwoff.com/pictures/icons/band.gif )
  3. Paste the URL inbetween the UBB IMAGE code:

    [img]http://adwoff.com/pictures/icons/band.gif[/img]

** On these pages, you will be taken directly to the directory of graphics that I created under the ADWOFF screenname on AOL. Click on one of the hyperlinks with a .gif or a .jpg suffix; it will take you to one of the graphics. Here is an example

http://members.aol.com/adwoff/graphics/evileyes.gif

The above URL is for this graphic:

To insert it into a message, I have to put the URL (http://members.aol.com/adwoff/graphics/evileyes.gif) between the UBB tag for images -- [img][/img]

So, to insert one of these graphics, I need to follow these three steps:

  1. Go to the graphics' page and click on the graphic you want;
  2. Copy the URL from your browser's address window (example: http://members.aol.com/adwoff/graphics/evileyes.gif)
  3. Paste the URL inbetween the UBB IMAGE code:

    [img]http://members.aol.com/adwoff/graphics/evileyes.gif[/img]

If you use the ADWOFF AOL directory for your graphics, you'll need to use your BACK button on your browser to return to your graphics' menus.

***For these graphics, I attempted to make life even easier (especially for the graphic challenged ) for you. Under each graphic is the URL for the graphic WITHIN the IMAGE tag! In other words, ALL YOU NEED TO DO is copy & paste this into your message!

Here's an example:

[img]http://adwoff.com/pictures/icons/biglaugha.gif[/img] -- which is this graphic -

Please know that it is ADWOFF's graphics' policy that all graphics used in messages must either be part of the ADWOFF Graphics' Library or a PART OF YOUR OWN LIBRARY -- set-up on YOUR OWN WEBSITE.

Why? To direct link to another site is called bandwidth theft. It is a serious breech of Internet Netiquette, and there can be some legal implications, too. In addition, any time you link outside the ADWOFF site, you are slowing down the site.

Beyond the pornographic or inflammatory graphics out there, ADWOFF is willing to accept your graphic and add it to the library for everyone's use. If it's a large file (we'd like to keep the graphics 20K or less), I'll attempt to make it smaller. If I can't, then there is a possibility that that graphic will be rejected (too big = too big a download time).

Graphics' Library:

You may also create your own graphics' library. If you're on AOL, you automatically have at least 2 MB of webspace for each screenname. If you're not on AOL, there is a chance that your own ISP gives you webspace. Finally, there are free sites available -- one of the best is Xoom.com. To find others, simply go to a search site (such as Yahoo, Google, etc.), and type in something like "free webpages." Or, something like, "Free FTP."

Speaking of which, if you decide to go this route, you should get an FTP (file transfer protocol) program that will make uploading a breeze. Here is a site that offers a FREE FTP program: Brandyware Software's FreeFTP Page

Why would you want an FTP program? Do you want to upload one file at a time (trust me, after doing this for 3+ years, YOU DON'T!), or upload a whole bunch?

If you get this far and you'd like to create your own graphics' library and you have questions, please e-mail me @ adwoff@adwoff.com

If you have graphics that you'd like me to put in ADWOFF's Graphics' Library, just ATTACH them to an e-mail and send them to the above address (AOL users, DO NOT put the graphic IN your e-mail).

Quoting Other Messages

Quoting:

To reference something specific that someone has posted, just cut and paste the applicable verbiage and enclose it as shown below

[QUOTE]Ask not what your country can do for you....
ask what you can do for your country.
[/QUOTE]

In the example above, the UBBCode™ automatically blockquotes the text you reference.

So, you want to do "multiple quotes" w/in the same message. How do you do it? Let's use some actual messages to demonstrate the easiest way to make it happen:

Mel,

I appreciate your frustration with INS. We had lots of fun with them 14 (OMG, has it been that long?) years ago.

My husband was a resident alien when I married him, & had been for what? 18 years? which made things easier, but he was (get this) an officer in the U.S. Army for 3 years before he finally got his citizenship.

I know they can make you , and all the can make you , but take it from me. Things will go more smoothly if you avoid

Just remember, wins in the end.

lol....thanks for the comic relief, Darla...

we went and got our immigration pictures today....

$50 for 14 of them...which is better than I expected...

the only thing is, they're only 2x2 inches, so it's not like they cost a lot to make....

blah

but thanks for the encouragement

we got the license today

yay!!

one more step taken care of....

Mel

You want to respond to both Darla and Mel in the same message. How do you do it?

  1. Notice what page you're on in the thread (only important if it's a lot of pages!)
  2. Click on the button
  3. Down near the bottom of the page is a "window w/in a window"; for Darla's/Mel's messages, I know that they were on page 10, so I click on the hyperlink "10"
  4. In that window, I scroll down to Darla's message; I find the information I wish to quote and highlight it (use RIGHT button on mouse) and COPY IT
  5. I then go to the REPLY MESSAGE WINDOW above
  6. I click on the button in the INSTANT UBB CODE menu; this appears in my window: [QUOTE] [/QUOTE]
  7. I put the cursor right after the [QUOTE] and PASTE Darla's message from below; it might look like this: [QUOTE]My husband was a resident alien when I married him[/QUOTE] (emphasis mine)
  8. I then respond to Darla a couple lines after the [/QUOTE]
  9. I then repeat steps 4-8 to get Mel's quote (and so-on for other quotes if I want to do more)

When it is all said & done, I might have a message window that looks like this BEFORE I click on the ADD REPLY button:

[QUOTE]My husband was a resident alien when I married him[/QUOTE]

Ah, so this is why Ms. Darla is ... well, a little off [img]http://adwoff.com/ubb/icons/icon17.gif[/img] [img]http://adwoff.com/pictures/icons/biggrinflip.gif[/img]

[QUOTE] k...anyway....as this is my first marriage (and last), I was wondering if anybody out there has some helpful advice for a marriage newbie?? [/QUOTE]

Uh, Mel? [img]http://adwoff.com/pictures/icons/biglaugha.gif[/img] [img]http://adwoff.com/pictures/icons/biglaugha.gif[/img]

[QUOTE] oh my....

I'm getting married in 3 days [/QUOTE]

Mel? Sweetie? WHY are you online when you should be as nervous as hell ... and working on the DETAILS ... and all sorts of FUN stuff for the most important day (up to now) of your life?

[img]http://adwoff.com/pictures/icons/biglaugha.gif[/img] [img]http://adwoff.com/pictures/icons/biglaugha.gif[/img]

I'd be [img]http://adwoff.com/pictures/icons/eye-popping.gif[/img]

Okay, okay ... enough lecturing ... on behalf of BB/Ns everywhere (especially since MOST of us will be preoccupied on your BIG weekend), best of luck as you take on this new, exciting chapter of your life ... and remember, as always, we expect details.

As always, if you have questions, ASK. And don't be afraid to ask about them on the boards. After we finish laughing (<ewg>), we'll be more than happy to help. LOL - no, seriously, if you have a question, chances are someone else could benefit from it, so don't be afraid to ask ... and to practice.

Code Tag

Quick Coding:

  • [URL=http://adwoff.com]ADWOFF[/URL] -- for creating links
  • [B][/B] -- for making text bold
  • [QUOTE] [/QUOTE] -- for quoting
  • [I][/I] -- for Italics
  • [IMG][/IMG] -- for graphics

Keys: the UBB code (i.e. QUOTE or IMG or URL or B or I) is placed within brackets []

The UBB code works as a pair (i.e. [QUOTE][/QUOTE]) with the second code having a back slash / in front of the code.

Inside the brackets, there are NO SPACES.

Finally, the only way you will learn this stuff is by playing with it and practicing. Sure mistakes will be made. That's what the EDIT button is for.

Of Note:

UBBCode™ is not case-sensitive (thus, you could use [URL] or [url]).

Incorrect UBBCode™ Usage:

  • [url] www.infopop.com [/url] - don't put spaces between the bracketed code and the text you are applying the code to.
  • [email]info@test9342J.com[email] - the end brackets must include a forward slash ([/email])
